Parents bring their children (siblings may come too) to the Visser Family YMCA for an evening of food and activities (swimming, gym time, crafts, movies, sensory activities, etc.) while the parents have a night out alone. The program is overseen by a Special Education teacher who specializes in working with children who have Autism and cognitive impairments. Currently, Parent’s Night Out is offered once a month. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members (for one child); for families with two or more children participating the cost is $40 ($60 for non-members). Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

Pine Ridge Bible Camp is a summer camp with programs for children, youth, and the mentally challenged.

The Camp’s challenged programs are designed for special needs populations that include Down’s syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other like medical diagnoses. Every participant needs to be interviewed by Pine Ridge staff to ensure that Pine Ridge can adequately provide for the needs of the camper. The program activities are flexible and designed to get campers involved up to their abilities.

Children with special needs and physical challenges may also be considered for mainstreaming into our traditional summer camp programs.

EnCourage Institute provides specialized interventions for learning needs. EnCourage Institute is a licensed agency for The P.L.A.Y. Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters). The PLAY Project is a home consultation early intervention program for children (ages 18 months-7 years) developed by Dr. Richard Solomon based on the Greenspan DIR/Floortime model. Parents learn to use play activities with their child on the ASD spectrum to provide intensive intervention needed for functional and social development. Other services include Music Play! classes (birth-age 5), consultation, advocacy, diagnostic evaluations for learning concerns and tutoring.

The Access Center is a single source for information that will provide answers, assessment, advocacy, and a tailored referral to the vide variety of service available through Kent County Community Mental Health. Project PERFORM is an IDEA Mandated Activity Project grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Education.
